Islamabad: An election tribunal comprising two high court judges is to hear a legal challenge to the acceptance of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif's candidacy for by-elections to be held next month.
The tribunal in Lahore has issued notice to Sharif in connection with the hearing on a petition filed by a candidate in the National Assembly constituency where he is contesting the June 26 by-polls. The hearing has been fixed for tomorrow.
Another tribunal in Lahore has issued notice to Sharif's brother Shahbaz, who is president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), for a Friday hearing on a petition filed against the acceptance of his candidature from two constituencies for the Punjab provincial assembly.
Shahbaz's candidature in two other provincial constituencies in the towns of Bukhar and Sialkot in Punjab have also been challenged before a third tribunal, which has asked the petitioners to submit proof regarding their objections and adjourned the hearing without fixing a date.
PML-N central information secretary Ahsan Iqbal, addressing a news conference in Lahore, alleged yesterday that behind-the-scene "intrigues" were under way to keep the Sharif brothers out of the arena in the by-elections. He pointed accusatory fingers at the presidency and the PML-Q.
