Peshawar: Gunmen attacked a Pakistani military supply convoy in a northwestern region near the Afghan border, killing four paramilitary soldiers and wounding four, an official said yesterday.
The attack late on Tuesday was the first major assault on security forces in the Khyber region since they launched a sweep on June 28 to push back militants threatening the city of Peshawar. "Militants ambushed two military vehicles near a graveyard in the Akakhel area killing three soldiers on the spot. Another died of his wounds later," said the government official, who is based in the region and declined to be identified.
The Khyber region had been virtually free of militant violence until this year but security has deteriorated recently. At least three militant factions operate in Khyber.
