Islamabad: The Punjab chapter of the Pakistan Peoples Party and its lawmakers in the country's largest province have nominated Asif Ali Zardari as candidate for the office of president.
Governor of Punjab Salman Taseer made the announcement at a news conference in Lahore, following the exit of Pervez Musharraf who quit as president on Monday.
Taseer said it was the prerogative of the PPP and the election of Zardari as president would be a "great victory for Pakistan and democracy".
Federal lawmakers of the province had earlier indicated their support for the PPP co-chairman to become president. The PPP central executive, due to meet today, is expected to come up with a decision in favour of Zardari.
Taseer said Mutahidda Qaumi Movement already supports Zardari and hoped that other parties would also back his candidature for president. The governor however pointed out that it would be up to Zardari to accept the nomination or name someone else to run for president.
