Peshawar: An explosion in Peshawar’s police post killed at least 17 people and wounded 80 others on Saturday and destroyed a nearby market, police said.
"The blast took place at one of our checkposts...there have been several casualties, both dead and wounded," said police officer Khalil Khan. The injured have been taken to hospital.
He said a suicide bomber apparently drove the car into the post.
Nasirulmulk Bangash, a top police official in the area, said the vehicle carried at least 150 kilograms of explosives and was apparently en route to Peshawar.
Television footage showed a blast crater one metre deep and destroyed vehicles and pieces of debris scattered across a large area.
The blast came as members of parliament and the country's four provincial assemblies were voting for a new president to replace Pervez Musharraf.
