Justice (retired) Saeeduzzaman Siddiqui has served as chief justice of the Supreme Court in 1999 during the tenure of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.
He became famous when he defied orders from the then General Pervez Musharraf under a Provincial Constitutional Order (PCO), after Musharraf took over the government from Sharif in a bloodless military coup in October 1999. He refused to take oath under the PCO.
Born in 1937, Siddiqui is considered a pro-democracy figure because of the stand he took against the then military ruler Musharraf.
Siddiqui has been a member of the Bar since 1962 and was appointed the chief justice in 1999. He had to step down from his post in 2005 when his tenure was cut short by Musharraf by three years.
He is also the nominee judge of the international court of justice from Pakistan at The Hague and is now is the presidential candidate of Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N).
