Dubai: A group of residents of The Gardens yesterday said they were "happy" and "relieved" by a Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) statement that its projects do not require demolition of any building.

The RTA said its statement is in response to comments published in newspapers that its projects will impact on buildings in the Gardens township.

"In this regard, RTA would like to clearly state and confirm that none of its projects, neither roads nor the Metro, requires demolishing any of The Gardens apartment buildings," it said.

But a spokesman of Nakheel, the builder of The Gardens township, had this to say yesterday: "We advise that to the best of our knowledge no final decision has been taken on the route of the proposed West Parallel Road. We look forward to further consultation with the RTA in the finalisation of the location of the road as far as it may affect any of our developments."

The Gardens management had earlier sent a letter to tenants of 12 buildings saying that their buildings could be affected by the proposed road. It had said that as a precautionary measure it will only extend the tenancy period of the affected buildings to June this year.
