Dubai: Five million counterfeit sexual stimulant tablets and sedative drugs worth more than Dh20 million have been confiscated by Dubai Customs.
The seizure during a raid carried out by Dubai Customs inspectors in the warehouse of a company operating in Jebel Ali Free Zone Area (JAFZA) also included thousands of packs of expired food products
The warehouse was also storing counterfeit medicine, in addition to large quantities of pills of an unknown drug.
Customs inspectors also found various amounts of fake Pfizer’s Lipitor, a cholesterol-lowering medicine, GlaxoSmithKline’s antibiotic Augmentin and Bayer’s Levitra impotence pills.
Dubai Customs has been carrying out a series of raids in Dubai and has successfully confiscated large quantities of fake drugs and materials and destroyed them under controlled environmental conditions.
Ahmad Butti Ahmad, Director-General of Dubai Customs, said on Tuesday the confiscation was one of the largest of its kind in the region.
The inspectors also succeeded in seizing 40 different kinds of expired food products distributed over 6,000 packs. The inspectors also seized food packing machines that were used to change the expiry dates for various food products. The warehouse manager and other workers were arrested.
Dubai Customs launched its comprehensive media campaign to familiarise the concept of intellectual property rights and the fight against counterfeiting and piracy, which will be crowned by hosting the fourth Global Conference on Combating Counterfeiting and Piracy next February in Dubai, which will be held for the first time outside Europe.
