Dubai: As fundraising efforts for the Dubai Cares campaign continue, another Dh25 million was donated to the education-initiative, bringing the total amount to over Dh713 million.
The initiative was launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Dubai Duty Free pledged a massive Dh20 million yesterday in support of Dubai Cares.
Commenting on the donation, Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, said: "As part of the growing retail sector of the city, Dubai Duty Free is also very much a part of the global community and this worthy cause, which aims to change the lives of a million children, is very much in line with Dubai Duty Free's own Charity Foundation."
Colm McLoughlin, Managing Director of Dubai Duty Free described the initiative as an "ambitious project" which has received a "huge response from the community."
"We are delighted to lend our support to this initiative which will have a far reaching impact for generations to come," he said.
Shaikh Maktoum Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Technology and Media Free Zone Authority, yesterday received Abdul Wahid Al Rostamani, Chairman of Al Rostamani Group and Khalid Al Rostamani, Managing Director of Al Rostamani Group, who reiterated the group's full support of Dubai Cares
During the meeting, a Dh5 million donation was announced in support of the campaign's objectives.
Solutions
"Shaikh Mohammad has always been exploring solutions to overcome obstacles that hinder human development and has always emphasised the importance of education as an essential prerequisite for sustainable development.
"Dubai Cares will help poor children around the world to help themselves, their societies and ultimately their countries," Abdul Wahid Al Rostamani said.
"Leading by example is nothing new for Shaikh Mohammad. History will remember his remarkable initiatives and outstanding contributions in the field of human work."
Unicef's efforts to advance Yemeni girls' education received a "major boost" following Shaikha Manal Bint Mohammad Al Maktoum's visit to the country, according to the UN agency.
Shaikha Manal toured Yemen this week in her capacity as a Dubai Cares ambassador, visiting students, teachers and officials from Unicef and the Yemeni government.
Meanwhile, thousands of Dubai's school students have started getting involved in the fundraising efforts, with over 220,000 voucher books due to be distributed to schools involved with the Dubai Cares for Schools Project by the end of the week.
