The days of shisha cafes could be numbered. A draft anti-smoking law is in the pipeline which will see the hubble bubble banned from public places.

There is an argument that shisha is part of the social fabric and should be exempt. But the harmful effects of smoking are the same whether the smoke emanates from a cigarette or from a shisha.

The danger is not only to the smokers but to those in proximity who are faced, literally, with second-hand smoke. Smoking was once considered part and parcel of cafe culture, but these establishments are discovering the benefits of a no-smoking policy as customers generally prefer to sip their tea and coffee in a clean environment where the air is not heavy with tobacco smoke.

Besides, if smokers want to indulge their habit they can do so in the privacy of their own home.
