Beirut: The Lebanese presidential election will be postponed for to November 23 to give rival leaders more time to agree on a successor to President Emile Lahoud, a senior political source told Reuters on Tuesday.

Lahoud's term ends on November 23 and failure to agree on a new head of state could result in two rival administrations and bloodshed.

Meanwhile, Lebanon's army tightened security in Beirut on Tuesday as rival leaders remained split over who should replace the pro-Syrian president before his term ends.

Soldiers tightened security in and around Beirut, manning roadblocks and deploying armoured vehicles around government buildings, a senior security source said.

"The army has started security arrangements," he said.
