Sydney: Australia’s prime minister said that Australian combat troops would pull out of Iraq by mid-2008.

Australia has 550 combat troops stationed in Iraq

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s timetable for withdrawal is likely to disappoint the United States, which has counted on Australian support for the war in Iraq.

"The combat force in Iraq we would have home by around about the middle of next year," Rudd was quoted by Australian Associated Press as saying.

Rudd has promised to withdraw Australia combat forces in Iraq if he is elected.
