Beijing: Food prices are set to rise around the globe as more developing countries prefer processed food over staple crops, according to a report released on Tuesday.
The International Food Policy Research Institute also cited climate change, globalisation and increased urbanisation in developing countries like India and China as major factors.
The report said that as global food demand and prices rise, it will also hurt the world's poorest in getting access to food.
"Food prices have been steadily decreasing since the green revolution, but the days of falling food prices may be over," said Joachim Von Braun, lead author of the report.
Today's consumers opt for more processed food and expensive meat and dairy products, driving up prices for those goods as well as for feed.
Switching crops for use in biofuels for alternative energy sources will also increase food prices and price volatility, especially in developing countries.
