Manila: Police said on Tuesday they are investigating possible links between a communist rebel faction and troops who staged a coup bid in Manila last week.
Two women among 36 people arrested were members of the Communist Party of the Philippines, while another man freed on Friday had leftist connections, police said.
"We're still investigating," said National police chief Avelino Razon. "One of the women was believed to be a common-law wife of a senior communist leader."
Senator Antonio Trillanes and former vice president Teofisto Guingona were charged with sedition after they seized the Peninsula hotel last week.
Political analysts were not surprised the police were linking communists with the botched coup.
"It's no secret that some factions of the communist movement were linking up with progressive elements in the military to seize political power," said analyst Earl Parreno.
