Dubai: Four lanes on the new Al Garhoud Bridge will open to traffic from Saturday, December 15, said a senior official.
“Four lanes on the bridge will be opened from Bur Dubai to Deira side while the motorists coming from Deira to Bur Dubai will continue to use the old Al Garhoud Bridge,” said Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority.
The new bridge, which consists of 14 lanes, will be fully opened in March next year.
The old bridge will be demolished once the new bridge is fully operational.

Toll gate or no toll gate, one still has to suffer two-hour traffic jams on very same road every day.

Salik gates have already reduced the traffic on the existing Garhoud bridge. The old bridge now offers unhindered access across the creek; the surrounding arterial road networks remain clogged. It will indeed by a funny sight when 14 bridge lanes are open and the same number of vehicles, which use the existing bridge, ply over them. Then, there will be more room for drivers to weave about and cut others off in seven lanes rather than in only three lanes!

The opening of the new bridge may create a bottleneck as you head towards Deira City Center. As of December 15, the bridge will have four lanes open to traffic which will merge into two tracks until the third track is completed. When seven tracks on either side will be opened it may result in bumper to bumper traffic if the roads are not expanded.

I think that the Roads and Transport Authority has done a good job by getting the Salik implemented. It has really eased the traffic. Hats off to the and Dubai goverment.

Will there be toll charges again. We would hope that the new bridge should not burden vehicle owners with a new set of fees.

Will having toll gates to enter and exit Dubai serve any purpose at all? I feel it is a bit too much.
