Havana: Ailing Cuban leader Fidel Castro has hinted that he may step down from power.

The 81-year-old president said in a letter read out on Cuban television that he had a duty not to hold onto power or obstruct the rise of younger people.

The letter was read out on Cuban current affairs programme, Mesa Redonda and added his aim was "to pass on experiences and ideas whose modest value arises from the exceptional era in which I lived".

It is the first time Castro has ever hinted that he would relinquish power in the communist state, although last year he handed over power to his brother Raul on a temporary basis.
