Seoul: The incoming president of South Korea has said he will take a hard line on North Korea.

Lee Myung-bak told a press conference that Pyongyang would have to abandon nuclear weapons before full economic cooperation between the two countries.

He also said North Korea would have to improve its human rights record.

"Previous governments have refrained from criticising and tried to unilaterally appease the North Koreans. I can say such a thing will change," he said.

Lee won a landslide victory in the Korean elections, taking roughly half of the vote.

His nearest rival, Chung Dong-young, of the ruling liberal party, polled around 26 per cent.
