Abu Dhabi: Masdar, an Abu Dhabi company focused on developing environment-friendly energy solutions, has begun feeding solar power produced by 22 photovoltaic panels to the local electricity grid as part of a major renewable energy initiative, its chief executive officer said yesterday.

"It complements conventional sources of power. It does not compete and does not replace [conventional power sources]," Sultan Al Jaber told Gulf News.

He said the PV panels were supplied to Masdar by 22 manufacturers for it to carry out one of the largest-ever field studies of solar panel technology and supplying renewable energy to the local power grid for the first time.

"The systems will be ranked for performance, durability and cost efficiency in a stringent series of tests, over a period of 18 months, to gain the most accurate and reliable picture of the long-term utilisation of solar PV power," Masdar said in a statement.

"Our involvement will generate a wealth of original data and strengthen ties with the leading names in the PV industry. It will also position Abu Dhabi as an ideal location for the testing and verification of PV, spanning all crystalline and mature thin film technologies," said Al Jaber.
