Washington: The US Marine who allegedly led troops in the killing of 24 unarmed Iraqi civilians in the town of Haditha in 2005 will not face murder charges, it has been revealed.
A statement from the US Marines said that Sgt Frank Wuterich will instead be charged with voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault and dereliction of duty.
The decision means that none of the four marines who were initially investigated for their role in the incident will face murder charges.
The now infamous Haditha massacre happened on November 19, 2005 when 24 civilians – including women, children and eldery men – were killed by US Marines.
Witnesses claim that the shootings were revenge for the death of a Marine who was killed by an roadside bomb.
