Dubai: Dubai-based adventurer Adrian Hayes arrived back in the UAE on Wednesday after setting a world-record "three poles" expedition.

Hayes climbed the South Pole, just 19 months after reaching the summit of Mount Everest in May 2006 and the North Pole in April 2007.

Hayes became the fastest man to reach the three poles and one of just 15 adventurers to attain the feat.

He talks to Gulf News about his experience.

How was your overall experience?
Brutal. Extremely tough but utterly rewarding.

How does it feel to be back in the UAE?
I'm sweating profusely but happy!

Were there any inconveniences while you were climbing the South Pole?
I had frostbite on the nose and lips, a broken tooth and I lost 12 kilos of weight.

What's next for you? Do you plan to break your own record or would you like to go on a different kind of adventure?
Next adventure is to go to Jumeirah Beach Park.

How did it feel to be so far from other people? Did the loneliness bother you?
I loved Antarctica and the isolation. I had hundreds of mails from friends via Sat tel.

Since you probably couldn't take showers, how would you keep yourself clean?
I didn't. You can't. I didn't wash my clothes for 53 days. I only brushed my teeth once a day.

What does it take to do what you did?
A lot of extreme endurance, the ability to survive in a hostile continent, a ton of mental determination and a bit of madness.
