Manila: Junior officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines are secretly recruiting soldiers to join a plan to topple President Gloria Arroyo, Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno warned.

In a speech at the Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters in Camp Crame suburban Quezon City, Puno said the country's defence system is closely watching developments among right wing rebel soldiers.

Puno told policemen to maintain vigilance and continue pursuing those behind the plot.

PNP Director General Avelino Razon Junior confirmed Puno's revelation, but he refused to give more details.

"Yes, we are closely watching to prevent a destabilisation move to succeed," said Defence Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.

Last November 28, Senator Antonio Trillanes IV and Army Brigadier General Danilo Lim walked out of the court where they were being tried for the 2003 failed coup, marched to Ayala Avenue, the financial district, and took over the Peninsula Hotel for six hours.

Former Vice President Teofisto Guingona, several Catholic priests and leftist leaders joined the two right wing rebel soldiers in calling for the ouster of Arroyo.
