Riyadh: A US-based rights group has urged Saudi Arabia to release a blogger detained for his writings.
Blogger Fouad Al Farhan was arrested for writing articles about political prisoners in the kingdom. He is being held over security-related issues, the Interior Ministry said.
Al Farhan’s detention "serves as a chilling reminder to those seeking to express their opinions," the Committee to Protect Journalists said in the letter.
"Arbitrarily detaining a writer and holding him for weeks without saying why violates the most basic norms for free expression," the group said.
Farhan said Saudi authorities think he was running "an online campaign promoting the political prisoners issue", according to an email sent to friends.
