Washington: The US military has released video footage of the confrontation between US Navy vessels and Iranian boats which took place in the Straits of Hormuz on Sunday.

The grainy footage, shot from the deck of the USS Hopper, shows small boats approaching the three US ships at high speed.

The Pentagon has also released an audio recording of the incident in which the US ships warn they will have to take “defensive measures” and a voice – which the US says was from an Iranian boat - replied “You will explode”

One of the Iranian boats came as close as 200m from the US ships.

Iran has dismissed the incident as “routine” but President Bush has described it as a “dangerous situation.”

He added: "I don't know what their thinking was, but I'm telling you what I think it was, I think it was a provocative act."

The four minute long footage released by the Pentagon shows boats criss crossing each other at high speed.

One of the boats is shown as a blue speedboat with three visible crew members.
