Dubai: Four new bus routes will be launched in April to connect new and old areas in Dubai.

"The new routes have been chosen after extensive survey to address the transport needs of people using public buses," said Engineer Eisa Al Dossary, Chief Executive Officer of the Public Transport Agency at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The new bus route number C0 will run between Deira City Centre and Dubai Zoo.

Bus number X23 will operate between the Academic City and Al Nahda.

Bus number X35 will run between Al Warqaa and the Green Community while the bus number 53 will operate between International City and the Mall of Emirates.

Some 104 buses will operate on these four lines.

Tackling congestion

Al Dossary said introduction of new bus routes is part of the strategic plan developed by RTA for the advancement of the mass transport in Dubai and to reduce traffic congestion on the roads.

He said the new routes would help encourage people living in the new communities to use buses and reduce traffic congestion.

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority had earlier said it will purchase 1,616 modern buses to expand its existing fleet of 600 by the end of next year. Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman and Executive Director of RTA, said it is the largest single purchase of public buses in history.

The number of buses in the emirate is planned to grow to 2,500 by 2009.
