Abu Dhabi: Jaywalkers would soon be fined for not using designated pedestrian crossings, said an official at Abu Dhabi Police.
Taking into account the growing number of accidents involving pedestrians over the years the Police is to kick start an awareness campaign against jaywalking next week.
As per statistics provided by the Traffic department of the Ministry of Interior, more than 1858 pedestrians were involved in traffic accidents in 2007.
In 2006, 1739 pedestrians were involved in accidents while 1805 were involved in accidents in 2005.
Amendments made to the traffic law that come into effect on March 1 stipulates that pedestrians who cross roads with speed limit above 80 km/hr would be held responsible for the accident.
"The growing number of pedestrian related accidents and run over deaths are a matter of concern", said a source. Pedestrians must not endanger their lives by crossing at unmarked areas or highways and motorists also must respect the other road users, he said.
