Dubai: Five people were killed in separate road accidents in various emirates and scores of traffic accidents were reported.
Two people were killed and several injured in at least 16 accidents in Abu Dhabi, traffic police said.
Bad weather and reduced visibility along with speeding were cited as the cause for most accidents.
A 23-year-old Emirati was killed on the spot after his car skid off the lane and hit a concrete barrier on the side of the road, as heavy rain fell on the city. The man was travelling on the highway from Abu Dhabi towards Dubai.
After hitting the barrier, the car rammed into another vehicle parked on the side but no one was injured.
"Sixteen accidents occurred in the city this morning injuring many motorists," said Lieutenant Mohammad Jabri, Head of Abu Dhabi Patrols section.
A German man died in another accident, near Umm Al Nar Bridge towards Abu Dhabi. Three German passengers in the same car and the driver, a Omani, suffered serious injuries.
Major Yaslam Mubarak Al Tamimi, the Head of Investigation and management of serious accidents section, said: "The car was speeding. The driver lost control of the vehicle and hit a palm tree ... in the middle of the road."
Rain has also caused scores of traffic accidents in Al Ain. A traffic police official said all of these accidents were minor and no serious accident has been reported. Two people were killed in traffic accidents and more than 500 accidents have been reported on Dubai roads since the early hours of yesterday morning until 10am, police said.
Colonel Omar Al Shamsi, Director of the Command and Control Room at Dubai Police's Operations Department, revealed that the room reported around 584 traffic accidents.
Colonel Al Shamsi said two people were killed in separate road accidents. One person was killed in a run over accident while the other person was killed when his vehicle turned over. He said the operations room reported 458 minor traffic accidents, 126 moderate accidents and 22 serious accidents.
One Emirati man was killed in Sharjah after being involved in an accident on Al Dhaid Road.
A total of 60 accidents took place on Tuesday in Sharjah, and among them six have reportedly sustained serious injuries.
No serious traffic accidents were reported in Ajman, except for a few minor accidents.
Tens of minor road accidents were reported in Ras Al Khaimah, with light injuries but no serious casualties were reported.
In Fujairah, the wet weather had little effect on traffic, said Lieutenant Colonel Ganem Ahmad Bin Ganem, Director General of Fujairah Traffic Police.
