The agreement by the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, in addition to Germany, to seek the enforcement of fresh sanctions against Iran is questionable in terms of whether it would achieve any feasible results.
The world community therefore should take a more innovative approach when it comes to tackling Tehran's nuclear programme.
The parties involved have agreed to put together a proposal for an additional set of sanctions which would later be presented to the Security Council for approval.
"We are united in the view that a nuclear armed Iran would have dramatic consequences for the Middle East and further afield," said German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Syeinmeier.
But this approach would prove to be impractical as much as insufficient. It would not resolve the issue but instead complicate it further. An issue as complex as the stand-off over Iran's nuclear programme requires adopting practical measures.
Slapping additional sanctions is counter-productive and only reflects a failure to bring about a viable diplomatic solution.
There is no question that having any nuclear-armed nation in the region would endanger its stability. But regardless of the main points of disagreement over Iran's nuclear programme, a confrontational approach would bring about grave repercussions.
