Rafah: Egyptian forces began closing the breached Gaza border on Sunday but still allowed people to return to their homes, witnesses said.

Egyptian forces brought barbed wire and metal barricades to the only remaining gap in the Egyptian side of the border following pressure from the United States to secure it.

The border has sparked crisis talks between Egypt and Hamas. On Saturday, Hamas leader Mahmoud Al Zahar said Hamas "will restore control over this border, in cooperation with Egypt, and gradually".

Hamas blew up the Gaza wall on January 23 to end an Israeli blockade of Gaza that has forced food and fuel supplies to run low in the territory.

Since the border breach, hundreds and thousands of Palestinians in Gaza have crossed into Egypt to buy food and other essentials.
