Honalulu: An American soldier has been found guilty of aggravated assault for his part in the killing of an Iraqi man last year.

Army Specialist Christopher Shore was cleared of the charge of third degree murder in the military trial in Hawaii.

The charges related to an incident near the town of Kirkuk on June 23, 2007 when an Iraqi man suspected of firing at a US helicopter was killed.

During the trial, Shore said he had been ordered by his platoon leader to fire at the man but that he had intentionally missed.

His platoon leader Sgt Terry Corrales will stand trial later in April.
