London: The family of a British girl found dead in India last week fear she may have been murdered.

The body of 15-year-old Scarlett Keeling was pulled from North Goa's Anjuna beach last Monday.

Her body was semi-naked, with just a bikini top around her neck, while her bikini bottoms, shorts and shoes were discovered by her mother on a busy path two days later.

Indian police said initial tests showed no sign of foul play, and they believed the cause of death was drowning.

They are still waiting on the full results of the post mortem examination.

However, Nerlon Albuquerque, an Anjuna police inspector, said Keeling's mother was afraid she may have been murdered.

He said: "The victim's mother approached us with the suspicion of murder and we are probing from all the angles."

He said there were no suspicious marks or evidence of assault on the body.

He added: "At least till now, we assume that the cause of death was due to drowning."

However, he said they would not be able to completely rule out murder until they received the full post mortem examination results.

Dakini Runningbear, a friend of Keeling's family, said: "The police say there is nothing to suggest rape or murder. But a doctor who examined her body told us he suspected foul play. Several people have been killed there this season."

Keeling, from Devon, was on a six-month holiday with six siblings, her mother and her mother's boyfriend. They had been in India since November 20.
