Sana'a: "We are facing a war declared by one side," said a Yemeni cleric denouncing the controversial republication of the Danish cartoons which were deemed to be abusive to Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

Shaikh Abdul Majeed Al Zandani, head of the Sana'a-based religious university, Al Eyman, warned western rulers and their "good people" from continuing the cartoon campaign against the prophet of Islam.

"We certainly know that the Islamic ummah [community] can harm Western interests everywhere. So, we call upon the Western rulers and their good people to think of the consequences of continuing such behaviours," said Shaikh Al Zandani addressing thousands of Yemeni women who were rallying Thursday in Sana'a to condemn the republication of the Danish cartoons.

The German interior minister should not have expanded the war to the whole of Europe, he should have confined it to the abusers, he said. "We are facing a war declared by one side," said Al Zandani who is accused by the United States of having links with terror. The shaikh called on Arab and Islamic rulers to form an Arab-Islamic union to face the west.

Religious guidance

On his part, the Yemeni minister of endowment and religious guidance, Hamoud Al Hetar, who also attended the same rally, called upon the Danish cartoonists for dialogue to learn about Prophet Mohammad (PBUH).

"We invite the Danish cartoonists for dialogue so that they know who the Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) is," said Al Hetar who has been implementing a dialogue programme with Al Qaida suspects in Yemen for about four years now.

The women demonstrating called for severance of all kinds of relations with Denmark and for the boycott of all their products.

The women demanded in a statement that Arab and Islamic countries through the Arab League and Organisation of Islamic Conference take up a strong position against the abusers.

The statement also called upon the UN to enact legislation criminalising insults against all prophets and religions.
