Armenia: Armenian police say at least eight people are dead and 33 officers injured following clashes between police and people protesting over alleged election fraud.
Armenia’s president Robert Kocharian declared a 20-day state of emergency late Saturday night following a day of violence between police and 15,000 demonstrators.
It was not immediately clear if the eight killed were protesters or police officers.
Troops and armoured vehicles patrolled the main streets of Armenia's capital Sunday. Opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosian has appealed for calm.
Several thousand opposition supporters had been protesting daily since a February 19 presidential election was won by Prime Minister Serzh Sarksyan. The opposition has said the vote was rigged to deny them victory.
