Manama: Al Wefaq Society on Monday won the support of five opposition societies after attempts to quiz a minister left parliament bitterly divided.
Three drives by Al Wefaq, Bahrain's largest political formation, to quiz Shaikh Ahmad Bin Atiyatallah Al Khalifa, the state minister for cabinet affairs, have failed because of fierce opposition from the other parliament blocs and independent MPs who claimed that the questioning had no constitutional validity.
The last two sessions of the lower house descended into chaos and MPs traded accusations in a name calling match that cast doubts about the possibility of reaching a solution to the stalemate that threatens the survival of the burgeoning parliament.
Al Wefaq, under pressure to honour a pledge to quiz Shaikh Ahmad who it says is guilty of abuse of power, said that it would exhaust all avenues to have the minister questioned in parliament.
"The questioning presented by Al Wefaq is constitutionally sound and should be allowed to go ahead," the opposition societies said in their statement.
