London: Madeleine McCann’s parents will receive “substantial damages” from two newspapers that ran a series of articles alleging that they killed her and covered up her death, the newspapers said on Wednesday.
The Daily Express and Daily Star published front-page apologies saying there was no proof to support the allegations they made against Kate and Gerry McCann.
The tabloids are poised to pay substantial but undisclosed amounts to set up a fund to facilitate the investigation into Madeleine’s disappearance.
"We accept that a number of articles in the newspaper have suggested that the couple caused the death of their missing daughter Madeleine and then covered it up," the Daily Express said.
"We acknowledge that there is no evidence whatsoever to support this theory and that Kate and Gerry are completely innocent of any involvement in their daughter's disappearance."
A Sky News report suggests that the damages may be as high as 555,000 pounds.
London’s High Court will hear the apologies on Wednesday when the case is formally settled.
