Harare: President Robert Mugabe’s ruling Zanu-PF party has lost its majority in the Zimbabwe parliamentary elections.
The Zimbabwe Election Commission revealed that the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) had taken 105 of the 207 seats up for grabs in the election.
Zanu-PF won 94 of the contested seats, with one being won by an independent candidate.
There are still seven seats to be declared, but Zanu-PF is certain to lose its majority in the parliament.
The results in the presidential election have yet to be declared.
However, the MDC released its own results claiming that Morgan Tsvangirai had polled 50.3 per cent of the vote, compared to Mugabe's 43.8 per cent.
If verified, this result would be enough to give the opposition leader outright victory in the presidential race, ending 28 years of rule by Mugabe.
