Karachi: The chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has accused Shoaib Akhtar on Thursday of alleged defamation, in relation with statements made by the fast bowler earlier this week.
Akhtar has been accused of tarnishing the PCB and the team’s name as well as personally defaming Dr Nasim Ashraf, who is demanding an unconditional apology along with 200 million rupees ($7.08 million).
In a television interview on Thursday, Akhtar claimed Ashraf tried to extort money from him for playing in the Indian Premier League and punished him because he refused to do so.
Other members of the team were also faced with the same circumstances, Akthar also alleged.
The notice said: "If you fail to strictly and immediately comply with the above take note our client reserves his and the board's right to avail any and all legal remedies under the civil and criminal laws of Pakistan."
The notice added that Shoaib's allegations were "utterly outrageous, fabricated, manifestly baseless and are vehemently denied in the strongest possible words".
