New Delhi: India’s violent protests over government job quotas have reached closer to New Delhi, as thousands of protesters burned tyres and blocked roads leading to the capital on Thursday.

Thousands of ethnic Gujjars staged violent demonstrations, shouting slogans and blocking roads bordering north Delhi.

Traffic on the highways was jammed and some train services to areas outside Delhi were suspended.

The Gujjars are demanding a restructure of the Hindu caste system so they can qualify for jobs reserved for certain sects.

Violent demonstrations last week left at least 37 people dead.
