Dubai:  Dubai International Airport is ready to tackle the summer travel rush, a senior official said.

The airport expects to handle 11 million passengers between June and August, 20 per cent more than it did during the same period last year, according to Dubai Airports, which operates the airport facilities. It will be the busiest period since the opening of Shaikh Rashid Terminal in 2000.

"What we are trying to do is to make sure that the journey through the airport is actually better than last year despite the increase in traffic," Paul Griffiths, chief executive officer of Dubai Airports, told Gulf News yesterday.

Traffic peaks in summer as people travel to their home countries and on holiday.

Passengers are advised not to be accompanied by too many relatives and friends so that the airport area does not become congested with people and cars.
