Harare: Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has been released after being detained by police for more than eight hours, party officials said.
Police detained Tsvangirai on Wednesday afternoon while he was campaigning with party members for his presidential election run-off.
“They've just been released without charge. The police were saying he addressed an unsanctioned meeting...They were held for 8 hours before their release," Tsvangirai's lawyer said.
The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) said Tsvangirai’s convoy was stopped at a roadblock from where he was taken to a police station southwest of Harare.
The MDC added that the detention was an attempt to disrupt their campaign.
In March last year, police detained and badly beat Tsvangirai after he tried to attend a banned anti-government rally in Harare.
