Baghdad: The United Arab Emirates will name an ambassador to Baghdad in the next few days, the Iraqi government said in a statement on Thursday.
UAE Foreign Minister Shaikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan made the announcement during a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki, the statement said.
Shaikh Abdullah is in Baghdad on a surprise visit to discuss bilateral relations between the two nations.
Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki welcomed the announcement and upheld UAE's "efforts to enhance diplomatic Arab representation in Iraq".
WAM news agency has said Shaikh Abdullah will be meeting a number of Iraqi officials during the visit.
Other media agencies reported he will meet Iraq's Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari to talk about the re-opening of the UAE embassy.
The visit is also the first by a foreign minister from the Gulf since the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
The UAE recalled its ambassador in Baghdad two years ago after diplomat Naji Al Nuaimi was kidnapped by a militant group and held hostage for more than a week.
