Dhaka: The Bangladeshi government hurriedly completed heath checks on detained former prime minister Shaikh Hasina, suggesting she could be sent abroad soon.
Jail officials said that doctors had recommended to authorities that Hasina be sent abroad immediately for better medical treatment. Hasina was arrested last year and is on trial on corruption charges.
"A final decision is awaited from the relevant authority," said Major Shamsul Haider Siddiky, deputy inspector-general of prisons.
Shaikh Hasina developed a hearing problem caused by grenade blasts at a Dhaka rally in 2004. Treatment for this was not possible in Bangladesh.
Hasina's Awami League welcomed the government gesture. "We hope the government won't delay her foreign travel any more," said league official Syed Ashraful Islam.
