Dubai: The world's first sports activity coupe, the BMW X6, was launched on Sunday in Dubai and the northern emirates.

James Crichton, director of sales and marketing for BMW, Middle East region said, "We have created another segment in the market with a sports activity coupe."

The X6 will be the first vehicle in the world to offer Dynamic Performance Control to increase agility, stability and traction, and can distribute drive power between the two left and right rear wheels.

Stathis I. Stathis, general manager of AGMC, importer of BMW, Rolls-Royce and MINI in Dubai and the northern emirates, said that demand in the region has been massive.

Demand

"The demand we have received for the BMW X6 in Dubai has been phenomenal and we have extremely high expectations for this new offering," he said. "The X6 will prove to be a best-seller in Dubai and the northern emirates."

Crichton added that demand has been "very strong" throughout the entire Gulf.

"BMW has seen a confirmed increase in sales every year for the last 10 years and with this new model we'll definitely have two-digit growth," he said.

BMW saw its sales increase by 12 per cent in 2007 in the Gulf countries, with 12,782 units being sold in 2007 and 11,250 sold in 2006. In the Middle East region, 15,150 units were sold in 2007 and 14,332 in 2006, an increase of six per cent.

"The Middle East is a region of great opportunity and potential for BMW Group as exhibited by the extremely healthy growth of nearly all of the markets over the past few years," said Phil Horton, managing director, BMW Group Middle East.

The X6 will be available in two variants: the BMW X6 xDrive50i and the BMW X6 xDrive35i.

The 4.4-litre V8 engine powers the BMW X6 XDrive50i and will be the world's first eight-cylinder gasoline engine, providing a maximum output of 407 horsepower. The X6 can go from zero to 100km/h in 5.4 seconds.
