Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi-based Gulf Automobile Industry Corp (GAIC), the first UAE producer of an indigenously developed double cabin pick-up, has started exporting some units from its factory in the Abu Dhabi industrial city, said Nasser Hamad Al Hajeri, chairman of the Gulf Automobile on Sunday.
"We have begun exporting to Saudi Arabia and Yemen," Al Hajeri told Gulf News.
The 150 horsepower pick-up will also be manufactured in Saudi Arabia through a 375 million Saudi riyal joint venture with a Saudi investor.
A factory in Dammam Industrial City 2 is being built, which will have a capacity to produce 15,000 pick-ups annually with production expected to start in 2009.
Since the launch, Gulf Automobile has rolled out over 100 pickups.
The gasoline-powered vehicle is priced between Dh36,000 to Dh60,000 in the UAE, based on the variants. The vehicle comes in a 4X4 variant and two 4X2 variants.
The parts of the pick-up are sourced from Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Egypt, South Africa, China and Thailand.
