Dubai: The Dubai Cargo Village has no new plans to expand capacity as future freight growth will be driven by the upcoming Al Maktoum International Airport in Jebel Ali, a senior official said.
Part of Dubai International Airport, Cargo Village has been experiencing double-digit growth rates for years.
The facility is expecting an eight per cent increase in its volumes in 2008 compared with about 11 per cent last year as the new airport will take some of its cargo by the end of this year.
It handled 1.66 million tonnes of freight last year and this year's projection is 1.8 million tonnes, said Ali Al Jallaf, vice-president of cargo for Dubai Airports, the company that manages the emirate's airport facilities.
"We will be satisfied with 1.8 million tonnes. Our capacity is now two million tonnes and we do not need to invest further. We have to look at Jebel Ali in the future," he added.
The six-runway Al Maktoum International Airport is being developed as a hub to surpass other world airports in capacity. It will be able to handle more than 120 million passengers a year and 12 million tonnes of cargo.
