Dubai: Airline passenger load factor, or the ratio of seats filled, fell almost one per cent to 72.6 per cent for the month of February, an industry group said.

The load factor decline was balanced by strong passenger growth, which is spurred by continuing healthy economic growth, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) said on Monday.

It showed that the global passenger load factor was 73.3 per cent last month, 0.6 per cent lower than the same month in 2007.

IATA said it was the "the most significant drop" in the passenger load factor in four years.

"The Middle East saw a 0.9 per cent fall to 72.6 per cent, balanced against a 20.3 per cent growth in passenger traffic supported by the oil business. This is strong growth even taking into consideration the leap year impact," IATA said in a statement.

The Middle East accounts for 8.7 per cent of the international passenger traffic market.
