Dubai: Emirates contributes about Dh47 billion, or nearly a quarter of Dubai's Dh198 billion GDP, to its economy, the airline said yesterday.
"Emirates' direct contribution to Dubai's economy is Dh22 billion and indirectly it contributes a further Dh25 billion," Shaikh Ahmad Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Civil Aviation Authority and Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group, said.
The airline's direct contribution comes through the passengers, mostly tourists and shoppers, it brings to the emirate and through their spending.
A large number of Dubai's hotel rooms are filled with Emirates passengers, mostly on visit or transit. The emirate's destination management companies, tour operators also benefit directly from the airline's passengers that are growing.
Travel agents and cargo operators are its direct beneficiaries.
Emirates last year carried 21.2 million passengers both ways - four times the UAE's population - half of which was inbound.
With 10.6 million inbound passengers, each spending $100 on shopping, this could hypothetically translate to $1.06 billion or Dh3.89 billion.
However, the airline also benefitted from Dubai's growing status as a regional aviation hub.
