Dubai: Emirates airline has said that establishing a Spanish route remains an option.

Discussions were held during a visit to the UAE by Esperanza Aguirre, president of the regional government of Madrid, according to the Economic and Commercial Office of the Spanish embassy.

A spokesperson for Emirates said: "Emirates is constantly evaluating new routes and opportunities as part of its ongoing expansion, and as a result holds discussions with different parties on a regular basis. While a passenger route to Spain remains an option, we have nothing to announce at this time."

Manuel Valle, economic and commercial counsellor at the Spanish embassy, said: "We are looking to start an air service between Madrid and Dubai. It will be aimed at boosting bilateral relations."

Currently, there are no direct Dubai-Madrid flights.
