Muscat: Oman's authorities are expected to initiate construction work on two new greenfield airports before the end of this year.

First to be taken in hand for development is an international airport at Duqm in the Wusta region, where a world-scale ship repair yard is currently under construction. Next in line for implementation is a modest-sized airport facility at Ras Al Hadd in the Sharqiya region, where a string of eco-tourism resorts are planned.

Both airport ventures are being overseen by the Ministry of Transport and Communications, which has already appointed consultants to undertake the detailed design and supervision aspects of the projects.

When operational in 2012, Duqm International Airport is expected to handle some of the largest aircraft in service today, as well as a range of heavy lift aircraft.

The new airport is expected to spur Duqm's development into a major industrial, petrochemical and commercial hub with a major port and dry dock project at its centre. Authorities have also confirmed plans for a huge Industrial Area and Free Trade Zone at Duqm, covering an area of 20,300 hectares.

Ras Al Hadd airport, on the other hand, aims to capitalise on the area's rich eco-tourism potential. Renowned for its turtle nesting beaches and protected nature reserve, Ras Al Hadd already attracts scores of local and international tourists.

Qatari Diar real estate investment company has firmed up plans with the Omani government-owned tourism investment firm, Omran, to develop a beachfront eco-tourism resort at Ras Al Hadd.

Covering an area of two million square metres, the resort will feature a marina, five-star and four-star hotels, holiday chalets, residential villas, a coastal entertainment and sports club.

Greenfield airports are also planned in Sohar, Haima, Adam and Shaleem, while the existing international airports in Muscat and Salalah will be considerably expanded as well.
