Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Commercial Bank (ADCB) CEO Eirvin Knox is taking legal action in the Philippines after Interpol sought his arrest in connection with allegations made by his ex-wife, according to his lawyers.
The Interpol warrant for the 60-year-old American is a personal matter relating to his divorce and not connected to the bank's operations, ADCB said last week.
The warrant was issued in the Philippines, where Knox once worked as the head of a bank, and relates to "a violation of an early 2004 [Philippine] act pertaining to violence against women and their children," Interpol sources told Reuters last week.
"The allegations made by Knox's former wife are completely baseless," according to a copy of a letter written by law firm Al Tamimi & Co and obtained by Reuters yesterday. The letter is dated Thursday.
Lack of evidence
A Tamimi employee confirmed the firm was acting on Knox's behalf. Knox declined to comment when contacted by Reuters.
"Legal proceedings have been commenced in the Philippines to quash these proceedings," the letter reads.
Knox filed for divorce in an Abu Dhabi court in March 2007. Mrs Knox subsequently alleged physical abuse, allegations that were investigated and dismissed for lack of evidence, according to the letter.
The Knoxes divorced on March 31, 2008 and Mrs Knox subsequently filed proceedings in the Philippines, according to the letter.
Interpol's "wanted" notice is on the website. Spokespeople for the international police agency were not immediately available for comment.
