Dubai: Per capita consumption of cosmetics and fragrances in the Gulf is one of the highest in the world, with the average purchase estimated at Dh1,229 per head, according to Eckhard Pruy, chief executive officer of Epoc Messe Frankfurt.
Cosmetics and fragrance manufacturers from around the world will be heading for Dubai to participate in the Beautyworld Middle East exhibition from May 18 to 20 in a bid to target the affluent Gulf states.
"The last couple of years were an extremely healthy period of growth for the industry. In 2006, the cosmetics and personal care market in the UAE alone was worth more than Dh1.5 billion in retail sales - an increase of 8.4 per cent from D 1.406billion," said Pruy.
"Skincare accounts for 10 to 15 per cent of the Middle East beauty sector market, where reports stated the total value of beauty product sales in the Middle East was Dh7.7 billion in 2007," said Andrea Werner, who is a senior show manager of Beautyworld Middle East, which will take place at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Massive growth
The market achieved a healthy five per cent compounded annual growth rate between 2001 and 2006 in fixed exchange rate terms and, according to Euromonitor's latest analysis, demand for products that claim to be natural or organic is one of the key drivers behind this dynamism.
Not only are these brands injecting innovation into the market, but they are also contributing to value growth, coming as they do at a 30-50 per cent premium over standard products.
Highlights of this year's Beautyworld Middle East exhibition will be a fashion show, and competitions that are much anticipated by regular visitors to the show.
