Dubai: The latest price index released by the UAE Ministry of Economy has shown some major discrepancies in prices of goods sold at different supermarkets in Dubai.

For budget shoppers buying in bulk, it may do well to check the prices before heading down to the grocery this week, as some essentials, such as sugar, mineral water and tomato could cost about Dh1 to Dh2.50 more at some stores.
A two-kilogram pack of fine granulated sugar from Australia, for instance, costs Dh2.40 more at Union Cooperative Society, which is selling the item for Dh6.50, compared to Dh4.10 at Carrefour.
A dozen bottles of mineral water (Akwa vina/1.5 litre), is sold for Dh13.75 at Union Cooperative Society, compared to Dh11.25 at LuLu Centre, showing a Dh2.50 price difference.
Other items that show a price difference of more than Dh1 include items in the dry goods section such as Pantene Pro-V shampoo, diapers (Bambay) and fabric softener (Downy Valley Dew) from Saudi Arabia.
The weekly list collated the prices of 35 commodities at LuLu Centre, Carrefour and Union Cooperative Society in Dubai last Monday.
Overall, Carrefour has the most number of lowest priced goods (14), followed by LuLu (8) and Union Cooperative Society (3), according to the price index.
